Pending reg not always informing website of new registration

I have been using Pending Registration for a couple of years now and it has come to my attention (only after a mail out to my wholesale customers) that we are not always being informed via Magento when a new customer has completed their registration form. Each time i and my web developer register for a new account there isn't a problem and i get notification that there is a new customer. I still get notification from some customers that have registered but i have no idea how many customers register and we don't get notification.
I have 2 web stores on the same magento site, one retail and one wholesale. The retail store automatically approves users as we would like. Pending registration is set up as follows, default - not active, Retail store- not active, trade store - active and all generated emails are working correctly.
If anyone needs any more information please let me know.
